About the Exhibition

In 1959, a group of ten young avant-garde artists in the Gifu-prefecture city of Seki organized VAVA with the purpose of transmitting local art activity to major cities of the country. The founding members, led by Ichizo Nishio, include Michio Ishihara, Akio Goto, and Akira Komoto. The VAVA group artists each have a distinctive style and are dedicated to producing free and creative works not bound by convention but reflecting the aspirations of the artist.
The exhibition shows, from the Seki City Hall collection, works by three founding members of VAVA— Ichizo Nishio, Akio Goto, and Akira Komoto.
