概要
今日、荒川修作は養老天命反転地や三鷹天命反転住宅といった特異な形体 と極彩色の建築で知られていますが、その特徴的な色彩 は作品展開を通して表れてきたものでした。1950年代末の日本において、コンクリートの塊を箱に横たわらせた棺桶と呼ばれるシリーズで頭角を現した荒川は、61年の渡米後から制作を始めたダイアグラム（図式絵画）で物体の輪郭や移動の軌跡を淡く多様な色で示し大きく作風を変えました。そこから発展し70年に発表された《意味のメカニズム》では、画面上の色彩そのものが思考実験の一要素となり、以降の体験型の作品や建築において色彩は空間を構成するものになりました。
本展では、意味のメカニズム発表後に制作された、鮮烈な色彩と対照的なグレートーンとが同居する《"No!" Says the Signified Untitled》のシリーズを中心に展示します。画面において 意味を示すものとして色彩を用いた荒川の作品を、今回は新たに見つめ直す機会となります。
