Shusaku Arakawa (1936–2010) was a Nagoya-born, New York-based artist, internationally active since the 1960s. Most notably, his Mechanism of Meaning series of works, launched in 1970, inspired many thought experiments regarding meaning and perception and had a great deal of influence not only on art but on science and philosophy as well. Later, his search transcended two-dimensional works of art to explore the human body and the meaning of existence itself. And
by way of experience-type works, he arrived at architectural works involving viewers, such as “Yoro Park: The Site of Reversible Destiny.”
This exhibition focuses on the phrase “A LINE IS A CRACK” from the Mechanism of Meaning series. It presents 23 works related to the time Arakawa was motivated to move beyond a two-dimensional crack toward the body and architecture.
