About the Exhibition

This exhibition presents works by Koji Tsubakino of the city of Asago, Hyogo prefecture. Using local clay and scrap wood, he depicts universal worlds found in the history of things people have lived with as well as in the accumulation of their memories. He chooses scrap wood and clay because he believes such materials are embedded with accumulated time and memories that can generate immense energy along with valuable messages. The texture of the silent, unrevealing clay surfaces reminds one of primordial lava and the red color visible through the cracks evokes the ceaseless pulsing of the planet earth. They evoke the earth’s history and nature’s great and unfathomable power. We realize afresh the all-but-forgotten reality that humanity is powerless before nature.
