The Treatment of Light

About the Exhibition

　Toko Shinoda has been producing abstract work in sumi since the late 1940s; among them are many quiet and elegant paintings using sumi and gold or silver. Work on a gold or silver ground has light and enriches the expression of the sumi lines. The patina formed by silver with the passage of time imbues the work with further profundity. Besides lines executed on gold or silver ground, Toko paints lines in gold and/or silver that imbue the work with gentle rhythms. This exhibition presents mainly works featuring expression in gold and silver.
